WE Challenge local residents to defy the recession and find employment

20 05 2009

The WE Challenge has once again proven effective in helping unemployed residents move closer to the workplace and in some cases find employment.

Gibber have been delivering the WE Challenge on behalf of North Tyneside Strategic Partnership (NTSP) throughout 2008 and 2009.

Working as part of a framework including organizations such as, Working Links, A4e, Age Concern and Wallsend People’s Centre, Gibber have helped to build participant’s confidence and motivation before providing them with a taster of working life within 6 different companies including Sainsbury’s and Orange.
100% of the participants who have completed the WE Challenge rated it excellent or very good and would recommend the course to other people wanting to improve their employability skills. A copy of our evaluation for Year 1 of the project is currently available HERE.

“Making the step back into employment can be daunting for those who haven’t worked for a long time, perhaps because of illness or if they have been caring for their family,” said North Tyneside’s Elected Mayor, John Harrison, Chair of the NTSP.

“This course aims to help people overcome that hurdle. They are offered support in real life employment situations so they build up their practical skills and their self esteem by recognising that they do have talents that employers value”

Deborah Ferguson, a lone parent with two sons who had been out of work for 10 years, found a new job at My Tub an online plumbing supplies business in Tynemouth after completing the course in November.

“The Work Experience Challenge increased my confidence and motivation,” said Deborah. “And then, with help from Working Links, I secured a job I am enjoying.”

Gibber have secured a contract with North Tyneside Council to deliver the WE challenge in 2009-10 and a contract with Newcastle City Council to deliver the WE Challenge from 2009 - 11.
