Substance Misuse - Stick or Twist
Format: Half day interactive workshop
Brief
Gibber were commissioned by Newcastle LEA to design and deliver an interactive, drama based workshop to explore the notion of substance misuse and its impact on personal safety. This was to complement the school’s drug education programme and form the stimulus for PHSE, creative writing, literacy, art and drama.
Results
Stick or Twist is a highly interactive, fun workshop that revolves around three 9 year olds, Sarah, Jack and Kieran. Through these characters we were able to highlight the risks young people take and assist them in making healthy life choices. Issues around risk taking, decision making, consequences, peer pressure, misusing legal drugs, alcohol, medicines and making mistakes were effectively explored.
By involving the young people in the action they were able to learn through their own experience. By using realistic, believable situations the young people were able to empathise with the characters and share their thoughts and feelings on the pressures they face.
Stick or Twist excellently compliments the work that is already being done in schools and successfully covers aspects of the PHSE/Citizenship curriculum, English (listening & speaking) and components of the Key stage 2 science programme of study.
When asked what they thought of the workshop 100% of teachers answered positively.

100% of teachers stated that they would like the programme repeated in the future.
100% stated the workshop was a successful, relevant part of their drugs education programme.
Stick or Twist has now been successfully delivered across Newcastle, Sunderland, South Tyneside, North Tyneside and Northumberland and is available for bookings nationwide.
“The workshop I saw was fantastic and the feedback has been really positive. Everyone enjoyed it and felt the children got a lot out of the whole experience.”
Di Robertson - Drug Education Coordinator for Newcastle
