Alcohol & Anti-Social Behavior - Trashed
Format: 50 minute performance with optional 50 min follow on workshop
Brief
Gibber were commissioned to deliver an alcohol awareness/ anti social behaviour performance as part of Newcastle City Council’s Citywide Anti-Social Behaviour Project. The objectives were to define and explore issues around, alcohol misuse, binge drinking, anti social behaviour (exploring consequences of actions, perpetrator/ victim), alcohol related crimes, peer pressure, personal safety and healthy living choices.
Methodology
Trashed is a 50 minute high energy magazine style performance that uses popular culture, humour, and bespoke films to explore the negative influence alcohol misuse has on the lives of three young people, their health, behaviour and relationships. The programme raises awareness around the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption 'binge drinking' and the impact of anti social behaviour and alcohol related crime on the community.
3 filmed scenarios highlight:
1. Police point of view - how drunk and disorderly behaviour impacts
on the community
2. Paramedic point of view - how personal safety is at risk when you
are drunk.
3. Sexual health messages - how young people are more likely
to indulge in risky sexual health practice when under the influence
of alcohol, leading to increased risk of pregnancy and sexually
transmitted infections.
These films were produced by Gibber in consultation with Health Care Professionals, Schools Drug and Alcohol Advisors, School Health Advisors, Drug Liaison Officer, Trading Standards lead on Licensing and Northumbria Police.
Social networking is a big part of youth culture with myspace, bebo and facebook fast becoming the ‘norm’ in the way that young people communicate with each other; as such a social networking site: www.bebo.com/gibberhugo was designed to compliment the performance and provide a follow on resource for young people to access supporting information in a way they are familiar with and at a time that is convenient to them.
Results
Trashed has been delivered to approx 21000 yr 9/10 pupils in Schools across Newcastle, Sunderland, Northumberland, South Tyneside, North Tyneside, Cumbria, Durham, Teesside, Maidenhead and Slough and is available for bookings nationwide.
