Gibber help Diageo to CSR award success
Shortly after announcing it was funding Gibber to deliver a third tour of The Smashed Project in Australia, Diageo won the Corporate Social Responsibility Award at the 2019 Australian Drinks Awards, for the innovative Theatre in Education program.
“Our local partner Gibber has done a fantastic job in creating a localised program that hits the right notes to reach Australian Year 8, 9 and 10 students. The Smashed Project has already given tens of thousands of local high school students a safe forum to better understand the dangers of alcohol and the long-term negative impacts of underage drinking.”
Diageo Australia Managing Director, David Smith
The CSR Award recognises unique and out of the box initiatives and strategies that demonstrate a commitment to corporate social responsibility principles. The category was hotly contested with the impact of the Smashed Project rating the highest with judges:
“Their entry really stood out in demonstrating the innovative ways in which our industry can continue to contribute positively to society.”
Endeavour Drinks Group (CSR Award Sponsor)
With a reputation for delivering high quality educational experiences that are aligned to the curriculum, Gibber developed The Smashed Project into an innovative multi-media theatre in education program tailored to engage with an Australian teen audience around the issues of underage drinking. The program is underpinned with Diageo’s corporate aims and objectives and has engaged approximately 46,500 students to date, across 4 states and territories.
Evaluation has shown The Smashed program to be a credible CSR model that delivers underage drinking education in Australia and makes a significant impact on young people:
- 100% of teachers would like to see the program return to school next year
- 98% of students say that Smashed is a great way to learn about the dangers of underage drinking
- 98% of students say they are less likely to drink alcohol underage after taking part in Smashed
“It was the most entertaining and informative session like his we have ever had. Engaging 200+ year 8 students for an hour is a huge achievement for 3 people!”

By investing in an education based Corporate Social Responsibility program Diageo have demonstrated a clear commitment to the future and well-being of the communities they operate in.
“I am incredibly proud of Diageo’s industry-leading and relentless commitment to reducing alcohol-related harm in our community.”
